This is a non-beauty related post but I really wanted to share it. I gave blood a few weeks ago for the first time and I want to share my experience with you all. Before I went I was nervous as I was expecting it to hurt but they really proved me wrong! I'd rather give blood than have a filling at the dentist!
It took around an hour (although they were running late), this included having myfinger pricked to check I had enough iron in my blood, discussing my health questionnaire, giving the blood (this took 10 mins) and having a drink and a biscuit afterwards. If you are in good health, are aged between 17 and 60 and weigh over 7st 12lbs then I would definitely consider giving blood.
There is no pressure to give blood so you could always go along to a session and see if it's for you - my mum came with me but didn't donate so you could go with a few friends. The nurses who run the sessions are lovely and are always grateful for every donation, they will answer any questions you have and make sure everything goes well.
A few weeks after you donate you should receive a letter in the post which tells you what blood group you are and a little blood donor card. My blood group is A- only 7% of the population have this blood group so it's quite rare. There is a reward scheme for regular donors - you can find more details about this here.
The Give Blood website is full of all the information you'll need to find out more and also allows you to book an appointment online, but if you have any questions please leave a comment and i'll get back to you.

ReplyDeletereally great post :)
ReplyDeletei'm so happy you donated blood & are encouraging other people to do the same!
xx
I give blood (although not recently). I have seen first hand the difference it makes to people and completely agree with you about it not hurting. I think one donation can help people. Absolutely worth doing.
ReplyDeleteKeep it up!

I'm giving blood on monday for the second time, I think its probably the most worthwhile thing you can do, everyone who is able to should. xx
ReplyDeleteI've given blood only once so far cause they are always doing it when i am at work :( but i would recomend it to anyone :)
ReplyDeleteI keep meaning to do this. It's one of those things more people should do but put it off. I'm personally scared to faint because I have never fainted before!
ReplyDeleteGreat post x
Nice post. I never gave blood because it's not a good blood. Sometimes I don't have iron. I'm portuguese and a while ago there was a campain to donate blood in Lisbon because they claimed there was only enough blood for two days. Fortunally a lot of people joined :)
ReplyDeleteIts such a lovely thing to do, I've always said I will but my iron count is so low that its not going to be possible.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely post, really encouraging :)

You're a total star for giving blood :) I totally admire anyone who gives blood, but just never got around to doing it myself. You've convinced me though, I'm gonna do it :)

ReplyDeleteI think I gave blood for the first time the same day as you and it was such an amazing, proud moment! :)
I too was nervous and scared but the nurses were SO lovely and reassuring and I felt so proud of myself once it had finished!
I am O+ blood group...the 'common' blood group, but i can donate to anyone so that makes me happy :)
